The General Legal Council
The General Legal Council (GLC) is a statutory body established under the Legal Practitioners Act and is
chaired by The Honorable Chief Justice of the Republic of The Gambia, Hassan B. Jallow and is confided with
the authority generally to regulate the legal profession and in particular-
- a. regulate admission to legal practice
- b. uphold standards of professional conduct;
- c. provide for legal education in The Gambia.
The GLC had as one of its mandates, the establishment of a School of Law in The Gambia and to be the
governing body of that School and so in the year 2011 it established the Gambia Law School. The GLC is also
confided with the mandate by virtue of section 26(1) of the Legal Practitioners Act, 2016 interalia to make
arrangements for a system of legal education, select the subjects in which those seeking to qualify for
enrollment are to be examined, establish the courses of instruction for students, regulate the admission
of students etc.
